How much of yourself have you learned to shrink just to make other people comfortable? For many women, people-pleasing starts with years of conditioning:
Be who the group wants you to be.
Be who the environment expects you to be.
Be who your family taught you to be.
But at some point, Caroline Maguire says, we may realize that version of ourselves is no longer serving us. Growing into the woman, professional, boss, or leader you want to become can mean developing a thicker skin, letting go of old expectations, and deciding that you no longer have to shape yourself around everyone else’s approval.
Self-acceptance isn’t about disregarding other people. It’s about recognizing when adapting has crossed the line into abandoning yourself.
